When planning my trip, I was torn between the Azores and Madeira. Ultimately, I chose Madeira – and it was the right decision! This Portuguese island in the Atlantic captivates with its dramatic landscapes, levadas – historic irrigation channels that cross the mountains – and a pleasant climate, which creates an eternal spring. It’s also the birthplace of football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, so taking a photo next to his statue is almost a must.
Madeira is also famous for its unique wine, whose flavor was shaped by long sea voyages in heated barrels. For rum lovers, there’s poncha – a traditional local drink made from sugarcane rum, lemon juice, and honey. The island perfectly mixes wild nature, history, and unique flavors.
From my perspective, Madeira offers great opportunities for an active vacation, even with kids. You’ll find plenty of both easy and challenging hiking trails, and if you’re up for it, you can even try canyoning. (Probably just for dads when they sneak away from the family for a bit! 😃) There are also beaches where the whole family can enjoy peaceful moments by the sea. An unforgettable experience is a boat trip to see dolphins and whales, and if you’re in the mood for an underwater adventure, diving is an option too. Madeira was worth it—I’ll definitely be back. I don’t usually visit the same place twice, but this seems like the great mix, where every family member can find something they enjoy.
